– Melody M (Mother), April, 2016
I no longer have a fear of meeting new people. I met some amazing girls in this class. I thought that they were going to be mean and when they weren’t I realized that my fear was silly.
– Inanna (Participant), March, 2016
Things are less stressful if I have a time once a month to get together with girls my age.
– Isabelle (Participant), March, 2016
I have suddenly gotten more mature during this time.

Amara’s Personal Story and Motivation For Starting Wildheart Girls’ Empowerment
Comparing Adolescence to Learning How to Swim
Adolescence is a time of profound changes, making it an incredible opportunity for transformation and growth. Girls start experiencing deeper thoughts and emotions as their bodies, minds, and perspectives on life are maturing. They may start to distance themselves from close family members and old friends as they begin to part from their childhood identity. Simultaneously, they are consciously and subconsciously absorbing societal concepts of what it means to be a woman. They may start to experiment with new ways of being through new friends, social media, make up, different clothing, and so on. Here at Wildheart, we want to offer them another way to explore the transition they are experiencing. Girls will be empowered to bring self-awareness to the process and their corresponding new emotional and behavioral patterns. Instead of simply imitating ways of acting that they have observed in their friends and the culture around them, they will have the choice to form their own unique understanding of womanhood.
Our culture has all but forgotten the importance and power of community support during times of great transition. Many indigenous cultures have created rites of passage for adolescents to support them in entering the next phase of life. Although these ceremonies are all different and relevant to the particular culture from which they come, they almost always take place in nature.
At Wildheart, we have experienced the power that nature has to transform, heal, and empower young people. We also understand the power of mindfulness practices to help clear the mind, nourish the soul, and encourage an intentional direction in life.
Parent involvement will be an important part of the process as each month we will offer follow-up activities for families to complete together. These activities will not take very much time but they will serve as tools to integrate the learning at home.
Last year we observed that the girls who signed up with friends they already knew were able to integrate the learning into their friendships. Simultaneously, the girls who signed up without knowing anyone got to explore new friendships. Both circumstances work beautifully and we encourage girls to spend time together outside of our meetings so that our course can positively influence their social lives.
In these transformational eight months, we will incorporate the elements of nature, mindfulness, play, and intentional rituals to provide a beautiful container for inner blossoming. All the while, the girls will be inspired by one another in a safe and supportive group setting. Journey with us into the wilderness as we discover what it means to be an empowered young woman.
We will meet the third Saturday of each month* October 2017 – May 2018 from 10am – 3pm. There will be follow-up activities to do between classes. Please take a realistic look at your daughter’s schedule before signing up to make sure she will have sufficient time and energy to participate fully in the program.
A note to moms and/or stepmoms: Please plan to stay for the fist hour of our Girls’ Empowerment class on October 21st from 10am – 11am.
